Broken window repair

Broken Window Repair

Safe and closed today. Glazed properly once it is cut.

A broken window is two problems at once: a hole in the building and glass where people walk. Those get solved in that order, and anyone promising otherwise is guessing.

Same-day glass?

Rarely. Same-day securing, yes — always.

Is the house safe to use?

We clear the glass and close the opening before anything else.

Insurance paperwork?

Written, itemised quotes and invoices, straightforward to submit.

Start here

How the glass broke tells you what happens next

Three types of glass, three completely different clean-ups, three different timelines.

What we are called out toSingle-hung and double-hung sash, sliding window panels, casement and awning sash, picture and fixed windows, basement and egress windows, bay and bow panels, transoms and sidelites, patio and sliding door panels, storm windows, historic putty-glazed sash, and small commercial storefront glass.

After a storm it is worth having a whole elevation checked rather than only the pane that obviously failed. Sealed units that held can still have taken damage that shows up as fogging weeks later.

  • Annealed glass

The plain single-pane kind in older Idaho homes. Cracks and leaves large sharp pieces, which makes it the most dangerous to clear and the simplest to replace.

  • Tempered glass

Holds until it does not, then fails completely into thousands of blunt fragments with nothing left in the frame. It can go from a small edge impact years after installation.

  • An insulated unit

Sometimes only one of the two panes breaks. The window still looks closed, but the seal is gone and the unit has to be replaced as a whole.

  • The sash and frame

After an impact or a forced entry, the surround is often damaged too. A new pane in a bent sash with a forced latch is not a repaired window.

  • The opening itself

Until new glass arrives, this is the thing that matters. Boarded or filmed properly, a house stays dry, warm and secure.

Idaho conditions

How windows break in Idaho

Wind, hail, winter and a great deal of construction.

01

Wind and hail on the Snake River Plain

Spring and summer storm cells cross southern Idaho with hail and strong straight-line winds. They tend to take several windows on the same elevation rather than one.

02

Cold makes it urgent

An open window in an Idaho January is not a next-week problem. Heat pours out, and pipes on an exterior wall can freeze quickly, which is why securing the opening comes before every other consideration.

03

Construction and yard work

A decade of heavy building means sites, trucks and gravel everywhere, and ground-floor windows facing a drive or a lawn take the overwhelming share of everyday breakage.

04

Wildfire season debris and smoke

Late-summer wind events that carry smoke also carry grit and branches. Glass damage during those weeks often arrives alongside screens that need replacing anyway.

The honest version

What gets repaired and what gets replaced

After breakage the question is rarely the whole window.

Repair is the right call when

  • The frame is intact and only the glass went
  • An insulated unit failed but the sash is sound
  • A latch or keeper was forced and can be rebuilt
  • The sash is cracked but repairable
  • Several panes broke in frames that are all still true

Replacement is genuinely warranted when

  • The frame was struck hard enough to deform
  • The sash is broken through rather than cracked
  • An older unit was already failing before the impact
  • The opening itself has been damaged structurally

We will tell you which column you are in at the estimate, before anything is ordered.

Questions

Broken window questions

Can you replace the glass the same day?

Rarely, and we would rather say so than promise otherwise. Glass is cut to your opening. What we can always do the same day is clear it and close the opening.

What does securing the opening actually mean?

Clearing broken glass, removing loose fragments from the sash, and boarding or filming the opening so the building is weathertight and secure.

Only one pane of my double-glazed window broke.

The window still looks closed, but the sealed unit has failed and has to be replaced as a whole.

Someone broke in. Can you fix the latch too?

Yes, and you should. A new pane in a damaged sash with a forced latch is not a secure window.

Will you provide documentation for a claim?

Written, itemised quotes and invoices that are straightforward to pass to an insurer.

A storm took out several windows. Can you do them together?

Yes, and it is considerably cheaper than one at a time. We will check the whole elevation while we are there.
